What is the Keys to Independence (K2I) program?

Keys to Independence (K2I) is a program that helps you get your learner’s permit and/or driver’s license. The program helps youth in foster care and young adults with learning to drive, getting a driver’s license, and paying for car insurance. Your case manager should help you with signing up for Keys to Independence (K2I) Your case manager should tell the court if this was done. If you qualify, K2I not only helps with the costs, but also can assist with driving lessons and resources to help you learn about Florida law that will help you get your driver’s license. 

How do I qualify for K2I?

To qualify for this program you must:

  • Be between 15-21 years old AND
  • Be in out-of-home care (foster care or living with a relative/non relative) OR
  • Achieved permanency within the last 6 months (adoption, reunification, permanent guardianship)
  • Or aged out of foster care

You may be able to receive services under K2I if:

You were in licensed care when you turned 18 and are now in PESS

AND

The cost of getting your driver’s license/permit is a barrier to getting a job or reaching your educational goals.

How do I get my permit or license?

To get a permit you must:

  • Complete the 4 hour drug and alcohol course
  • Be between 15 and 17 years old
  • Pass a vision and hearing test
  • Pass the learner’s permit written test
  • Provide required documents (original birth certificate, social security card, proof of address)

To get a driver’s license you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Complete a drug and alcohol course
  • Pass a vision and hearing test
  • Pass the Class E Knowledge Exam
  • Pass the Class E Driving Skills Test
  • Provide required documents  (original birth certificate, social security card, proof of address)
